Thumbnails View Support for Windows Explorer

Quote 1 :

Windows only: You may have noticed that windows only supports thumbnail icon previews for a handful of image formats. Free utility Thumbview adds in over a dozen more to make sure you can preview all your images.

It's annoying to look at a directory of image thumbnails and have some be proper thumbnails, while others are just icons of whatever program they are associated with. Thumbview adds support for 19 image formats, including PNG, PSD, TFF, and more.

According to the documentation on the Thumbview site, it's light on system resources and only springs into action when rendering a new batch of thumbnails. On our test machine it was quick and seemed no slower or faster than Windows typically is when re-filling thumbnails. For an alternative application, check out previously mentioned Xentient Thumbnails. Thumbview is freeware, Windows only.

 Quote 2 :
Windows only: Freeware application Xentient Thumbnails replaces all image icons on your desktop or in Windows Explorer with a thumbnail preview of the image. Of course Windows Explorer has the Thumbnail view and Filmstrip views dedicated to image thumbnails, but after you install Xentient Thumbnails and restart your computer, all image icons in every Explorer view will be replaced with actual image thumbnails. Xentient Thumbnails is freeware, Windows only.

Get the Vista sidebar in XP

Quote :

Installing the sidebar consists of installing three packages: Alky for Applications, Windows Sidebar Installer, and Gadget Extractor. Alky for Applications is where the magic happens allowing Vista-specific software to run under XP. An interesting side-effect of installing the Windows Sidebar Installer is that the Vista-specific fonts are added to your XP installation.

Create Restore Points on the Fly

I know.too much step too open the SYSTEM RESTORE.

Uh oh! Did experimenting with beta software thrash your Windows install? Don’t fire up System Restore and revert to the last known good configuration. That is, if you have one.

Windows doesn’t always create restore points when it should, and who wants to go through the rigmarole of sifting through menus to manually create one? Now you don’t have to, thanks to a VB script (free, http://tinyurl.com/3rw0) that does the job with just a double-click of the mouse.

That will help you on howto create restore point on windows.

HowTo Put Custom Logo in Your Windows System Properties

I share with you something from Maximum PC Magazine March 2008.

Brand your PC with a custom logo. OEM vendors often dress up the System Properties screen with a custom logo and support information, giving prebuilt PCs an air of professionalism. Well guess
what? You can add the same personal touch to your own machine in just a few easy steps.

  1. Open up any photo-editing program and create a 180x114-pixel image.
  2. Save the image as a bitmap and name it oemlogo.bmp, then
    place it in C:\Windows\System32.
  3. Next, create a Notepad file in the same folder and save it as
    oeminfo.ini. OEM resellers use this file to enter customer-support information, but you can write whatever you wish as long as you use the following format:
    [General]
    Manufacturer=Your Name/What ever
    Model=Your Name/What ever
    [Support Information]
    line1=Visit this blog everyday :
    line2=http://tips-4-you.blogspot.com/
  4. If you need more space, just create a new line.

Hide and Lock Folder in Windows XP

Quote :

Windows users: You can hide data from other users by turning ordinary folders into links to the Control Panel.

Quote :

It basically involves using a script to morph the folder into something completely different so that it's still visible, but nothing inside the folder is accessible. In order to view the data, you have to run another script to morph it back. Anyone who clicks on the folder will be brought to the Control Panel and simply think it is a shortcut.

HowTo Give a folder its very own drive letter

Quotes :

Pretend that you have a file folder called C:\data\word_docs, that you use it constantly, and that you would like to refer to it with a shortcut of W:. Open up a command prompt window and issue the following command:
SUBST w: C:\data\word_docs
SUBST is short for substitute. (DOS commands are case-insensitive, so you could enter it as "subst" as well.) So, now, W:\intro.doc is the same thing as C:\data\word_docs\intro.doc -- two different ways to refer to the same file.

Show hidden software in Add/Remove programs

Quote:

Essentially it boils down to this: Windows XP comes with a bunch of pre-loaded software. Lots of it you can't even find in Add/Remove programs. Why? Because Microsoft designed it this way.

By simply opening up the file Sysoc.inf (This is in the %SystemRoot%\Inf folder), and removing the word 'hide' you can force these programs to show up.
